Paper 1: Accounting

This paper builds on the concepts you learned in Paper 1 of CA Foundation. This is because, as a qualified CA, your core competency area lies in accounts. You will need to delve deep into this area. You will need to be familiar with accounting standards, Indian Accounting Standards (Ind AS), Guidance Notes and contemporary topics in Accounting and Reporting. This is in addition to you having to develop skills in the area of preparing and presenting financial statements of various business entities.
Not only that, these accounting standards are constantly being updated by new legislation. ICAI updates the syllabus to reflect these latest changes.
Considering this, LearnCab ensures that our study content for this paper remains relevant. This is done by revamping and updating the content as and when the syllabus changes. All this is done at no cost to you! This way, you will not have to go hunting for and spending money on extra resources to keep current with the material.
Also, we understand that interpreting and gaining knowledge of accounting standards and the like is a challenging task. This is because much of this is theoretical and involves memorisation of the relevant standards. That is why, at LearnCab, we give you tips on how best to analyse, understand and gain knowledge of these standards. This is done via means of interesting animated videos and illustrative study notes. Studies have shown that students who are exposed to a visual way of learning tend to perform better on memory recall tasks. This type of recall is a must to succeed in this type of exam.
This topic is taught by two faculty: CA Chinmaya Hegde and CA Srikanth M S
CA Chinmaya Hegde’s teaching experience covers all three levels of the Chartered Accountancy Course over a period of 6 years in various academies such as Samvit Academy and CAPs. He is a rank holder in all three levels (13th rank in CA Foundation, 3rd rank in CA Intermediate and 39th rank in CA Final). A Chartered Accountant by profession, at the CA Intermediate level, he is one of our faculty for the Accounting and Advanced Accounting papers. So, when studying these two papers, you will get a smooth transition from paper 1 to paper 5.
CA Srikanth M S is the other faculty for this paper. He will also be teaching the Advanced Accounting paper (Paper 5 in group 2, CA Intermediate). Again, because these two papers are somewhat related, in this way you will have a smooth transition from paper 1 to 5.
CA Srikanth MS teaching experience covers than 5 years, and during this period, he has taught over 800 students. He believes that the online medium is the best way to reach out to more students. He specialises in the field of Accounting, Auditing & Assurances, Taxation especially Indirect Taxes, and has over 6 years’ experience working in these domains. He is currently the General Manager, Finance at Jain Housing & Constructions Limited.

Paper 2: Corporate Laws & Other Laws

Laws are needed to ensure that businesses are regulated so that the relationship of business with society is a functional one. Otherwise, widespread chaos and conflict may ensue. As a CA, you need to understand the legal framework under which business transactions are carried out. That is why, by studying this paper, you will gain knowledge of legal provisions of selected laws and their application in various scenarios.
The difficulty that students face while studying this subject is that it involves a lot of theory. Also, it could be the first time students have such a detailed exposure to reading law. Reading law and the language around it is not like reading other content. Every word and phrasing of the law is important and needs to be analysed and interpreted in practical cases.
That is why the faculty who teach this subject provide a lot of examples. They go through a lot of case studies so that you see how the law is applied and interpreted. Care is also to taken to use graphical representations and animation to explain concepts. This is because such animation and representations are memorable, and you will be able to absorb this information faster.
Another major difficulty that students face is that the laws keep getting updated by legislation. Once the laws are changed/updated, ICAI will then effect the relevant changes in the syllabus. This is to ensure that, as a student, your knowledge of law is current. So, finding the latest study material may be difficult.
That is why, at LearnCab, we continually update our content to reflect the latest changes in the syllabus. This is done at no cost to you. So, you need not fear your knowledge of law being outdated.
This topic is taught by two faculty: CS Dattari H M and CA Rajiv Ravindran.
CS Dattari teaches the Corporate Laws part of the paper. He holds 2nd rank from Mysore University. Mr. Dattatri has over 16+ years hands on experience in corporate, legal, secretarial matters. He was the Chairman of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India, Bangalore Chapter. At the CA Intermediate level, he is our faculty for Corporate Laws.
CA Rajiv Rabindran focuses on Other Laws in the paper Corporate Laws and Other Laws. He has 12+ years’ experience in teaching in taxation and law at various chapters of ICAI. He is a Chartered Accountant by Profession, a Commerce graduate from Bangalore University, currently associated with PSDY & Associates, Kochi.

Paper 3: Cost and Management Accounting

This paper is more commonly known as costing. It is one of the most interesting papers of the CA course. Costing is important for a CA acting as a consultant for businesses. Businesses need to keep their costs at a minimum, as well as leverage their resources properly. As a CA, you are tasked to identify ways to maximise revenue, and ensure that the company runs smoothly in terms of operations.
Students face difficulty in the paper due to the following reasons:
• Ignoring theory
• Inadequate practice (written or otherwise!)
• Not referring to the previous papers
• Lack of understanding of formulae and concepts
If you analyse these reasons, it all boils down to fear and the reputation of the paper. That is why, the faculty who teach this paper say that you do not have to fear this particular subject. Costing comes down to common sense. With a good understanding of theory, you should be able to do well. It is also a great chance for you to gain an exemption!
The way the faculty approach the study is by emphasising the fundamentals and showing you how they are applied in various situations. They go over past exam papers and suggested answers from the Institute. At LearnCab, we will provide you with further mock exams and papers so that you get enough practice to be prepared.
The faculty encourage you to ask questions to help clear your doubts. You can use our doubt clearing facility where we forward your questions to the relevant subject matter experts.
While studying, we suggest that you take an active role rather than a passive one. You should take short notes while you watch the videos. This way you will retain concepts in your memory. Our illustrated notes that provide a concise summary of the videos will also help you in this regard.
Two faculty members teach this paper: CA Hariharan and CMA Raveendranath Kaushik.
CA Hariharan is one of the most well known and popular faculty for Costing at ICAI branches and various institutions in South India. He has over 10+ years in teaching CA students and is fondly known as the “Costing Guru”. A recipient of the CM’s award in excellence in Academics, he is dedicated and passionate about teaching. This is reflected in his amazing record of 38 continuous hours of teaching at the ICAI Trivandrum branch.
CMA Raveendranath Kaushik is a Cost and Management Accountant by profession. He has over 8 years’ teaching experience as a trainer for students of Professional courses (CA/CS/CMA) at various institutions and professional bodies. He is also the guest faculty at ICAI Bengaluru chapter. He holds PG degrees in Economics, Finance and Tax laws, and is also an MPhil in Economics. He is certified by IIT (Institute of International Trade) – Centre for WTO studies in International Taxation. He is currently a consultant at Raveendranath Kaushik & Associates.

Paper 4: Taxation

Tax is the main source of revenue for the government. There are two types of taxes that you will need to know in the paper: Income-tax Law and Indirect Taxes.
Under Income-tax, you will have to understand laws and procedures under Income-tax Act, 1961. The topics covered include many areas such as the tax rates applicable (for individuals, companies other associations of persons), income earned by all three categories, planning tax, detecting tax avoidance and evasion, settlement of tax cases in case of non-compliance, etc.
The Indirect Tax Law part of the papers involves study of the tax known as GST. With its introduction on 1st July, 2017, it has become a game changer in the landscape of Indirect Tax Law in India. Here Indirect Taxes such as Excise Tax, Service Tax, Central Sales Tax and State-Level Tax, etc. all are subsumed under GST.
The main challenge faced by students studying these topics is the changing nature of the law. Provisions in the Income-tax Act are amended yearly with the passage of the Finance Act. GST is relatively new in India. So, specific provisions/legislations are being updated constantly to address unforeseen difficulties in implementation. As ICAI wants you stay up to date with your knowledge, they change the syllabus as and when such legislation becomes effective.
That is why, our content continuously gets updated as per the latest amendments. We make these changes available to you at no additional cost. That way, you will not have to spend extra time and effort hunting for other resources.
Not only that, our faculty use a direct, straightforward approach to teach the material. They introduce the theory followed by practical examples. This way you understand the theory well. We also use graphical representations and animation to enhance recall of concepts.
Professor P. Subbaraman teaches Income-tax law in this paper. He is quite renowned in South India and is known as “The Tax Master” by students. He has over 12 years’ experience in teaching CA students and is reputed faculty at various Institutions in South India. He is an MBA by qualification.

CA Praveen Jain teaches Indirect Tax Laws in this paper. He has 5+ Years teaching experience at various esteemed academies and Institutions, and is a Chartered Accountant by Profession. A partner at RaguPrashanth & Associates, Chartered Accountants, Coimbatore, he has hands on experience in the field of Indirect Taxation.

Paper 5: Advanced Accounting

This paper is a more advanced version of paper 1 in CA Intermediate. The idea here is to have you continuously update yourself thereby ensuring that you will be able to perform your core function as an accountant. You will be introduced to even more accounting standards and their application. Especially in the area of banking, financial services and the insurance sector.
As mentioned in the note under paper 1, legislation around these standards keeps changing. And ICAI updates the syllabus to reflect such changes. So, it becomes imperative that during your study, you become familiar with the updates to the syllabus.
To help you with this task, LearnCab ensures that our study material is up to date with the latest changes in the syllabus. This is done at no cost to you. So, you will not have to waste time and money searching for other study material.
Not only that, we work out practical problems related to these areas of financial reporting. By this, we make sure that you are able to apply your theoretical knowledge to practical problem-solving scenarios. These practical problems will be similar to those you face in the exam. This will give you a significant advantage going into the exam.
CA Chinmaya Hegde and CA Srikanth M S are our faculty for this paper. They also teach paper 1 in CA Intermediate. This is because this paper builds on the concepts from paper 1. Because you might be already familiar with their teaching style from paper 1, you will get right into your study.

Paper 6: Auditing and Assurance

Auditing is one of the core competency areas in the CA profession. As an auditor, you are tasked with various responsibilities under the law. You are expected to conduct statutory audits of companies. You should conduct these audits by following the auditing standards laid out. So, knowledge of the auditing procedure is very important.
You should note that if new legislations/ Engagement and Quality Control Standards /Guidance Notes/Statements are enacted in place of the existing legislations, the syllabus would include the corresponding provisions of such new legislations with effect from a date notified by the Institute.
We will update the content as and when such changes to the syllabus are made by ICAI. These changes will be provided to you for free so that you do not have to waste time and money to find other resources. Now, note that auditing is a very practical field. So, our lectures and study material are designed to help you apply theory in a practical manner.
This is done by making full use of the technology available. Our faculty makes judicious use of animation so that students can visually understand concepts. As you know, people learn better if they can get a visual picture of the information presented.
The faculty who teaches this paper is CA Vikas Oswal. He has over 12+ years’ experience in teaching auditing for CA Intermediate and CA Final students at ICAI and other private institutions. He is the author of one of the most definitive books on Audit for CA Intermediate/CA IPCC & CA Final students. His way of teaching concepts is dynamic, dramatic and entertaining. An FCA, he holds various diplomas like DISA and ACS.

Paper 7: Enterprise Information System & Strategic Management

This paper is somewhat controversial among CA students. They feel it is quite boring because they think it would be too technical. And they do not see the relevance of the paper in their accounting career. So, little effort is made to understand the material.
In actual fact, the paper itself is quite interesting and relevant. You will learn how automation affects and impacts business. You will also understand how business process functions and its importance.
As an employee of a business, your need to understand EIS is very important because you will deal with the concepts on a daily basis. If you are in practice, you will have to audit and review systems.
So, it is not the case that EIS is boring and irrelevant. In fact, understanding EIS is of the utmost importance.
With LearnCab, the approach to teaching the subject is to emphasise its importance and relevance. This is done by means of various examples to show how the concepts learned are applicable to smooth business operations.
Two faculty teach this paper: CA Manali G and TPS Easwaran.
CA Manali Ganediwal has extensive experience in teaching and has taught over 2000 students in her career. She has authored papers on information security in various finance and banking journals. Additional qualifications include FCA, DISA and CISA. Her approach to teaching is to make it interactive and she gives detailed practical examples.

Paper 8: Financial Management & Economics for Finance

The main objective of Financial Management or F.M. is to maximise the wealth of the stake holder. This is not a foreign concept to most people nowadays. After all, in life you try and maximise your own wealth and manage your finances. This concept of managing money applied to the corporate world is nothing but Financial Management!
But, in order to be good at financial management, you need to understand economics in the financial domain. You need to have an idea of tools of financial economics to make strategic decisions. You need to gain knowledge of subjects like Macro-economics, Public Finance, Monetary theory and International Economics.
But you do not need to know all this very technically. You just need to know it functionally to meet your requirements as an accounting professional.
That is why, our faculty explains this topic in a clear, lucid and non-technical manner. With the appropriate use of illustrations, animations and graphical representations, you will get a good grasp of the subject matter.
You do however, need to be proactive in your study. You must keep abreast of the latest financial, political and economic situations in the world. You should do this by subscribing to various financial newspapers and blogs.
CA Vageesh Hegde is in charge of teaching this topic. He holds a variety of degrees, certifications and honours incudling B.Com, FCA, ACS and LLB. He has over 14 years’ professional experience and is a certified trainer from ICAI. He is also a faculty for various professional courses and is a practicing Chartered Accountant.
